Pinterest strikes again!

Seriously, I might be obsessed at this point.

This month’s school project was to turn an item (or items) from the recycling box into something else.

In other words, upcycle the recycle!

We dug out some tin cans and got to painting…

I thought we could turn them into wind chimes. A rainbow window chime.

We gathered string and bottle caps. We punched holes in the caps and cans. We tried and tried to tie the cans together to make anything that would resemble a wind chime. And when that went to hell in a hand basket I went on Pinterest.

And saw this awesomeness pinned. A tin-can lantern? Yeah we can!

The holes required a little more than a hammer and nail, so we enlisted dad’s help because while he says I don’t know how to use the power tools really it’s just that he doesn’t like to share his toys

And then gave it a new paint job with something more durable to the elements (Chrome!)….

Let it dry and …..

Awesmazing.

Too bad we don’t get marks in SK because this totally deserves an A+

I sent out an FB request to my friends for materials with which to craft.

One person gave me something.

One!  (thank you RP!)

And with a silent auction happening at work I was asked by the same person if I would make something for people to bid on.

Of course I can!

Now she asked for something specific but without a time frame there is only so much I can do. So I started with this and figure if I have another few days I can make a bag/purse like she requested.

This skirt was in the bag of clothes she gave me and when I saw it I immediately thought pillow.

So that’s what I made….

What do you think? Would you bid on this?

It’s like the tree has given us a gift of purse! But really I just forgot to take a picture of my finished project as usual so I tossed it up there on a whim. I probably should have at least picked a limb low enough to get the details on the bag!

I made this for my SIL. She had seen the one I made for myself ages ago and asked for one. She provided the pants, yes, pants, I did the rest.

This is a purse made from a pair of cords. She provided a black pair and I dug through my stash and found a fun butterfly patterned piece big enough for the lining. I lined the inside of the handles with the same material and decided at the last minute to make a belt for it as well. The waist size of the pants determines the size of the bag so this wasn’t a large one, about a 6 maybe. I didn’t put any interior pockets but could have as there ended up being more room than I anticipated. It is meant to be a forearm bag only because of the short handles.

I handed it off to many thank you’s, great job’s and wow you should make these for money! but honestly I prefer blankets.

And now I need to get back to the blanket I have been procrastinating over because as usual I am running short on time!

at least until I finish these next projects. yes, projects. because I am that good…or that crazy…the jury is still out

I love the whole process of building something from scratch. I try to put my ideas to paper as much as possible but I’m not an artist so sometimes what I draw and the idea/picture in my mind don’t mesh. Other times I just draw several scenarios about the same idea to see which I like the most and go from there. I don’t think I’ve ever created anything that exactly matched the pictures I’ve drawn. Most of the time I just make it up as I go and yes that can result in taking a lot of things apart.

Sometimes the planning is only this…

Rudimentary figures at best.

Picking the fabric is actually the first step of the project for me, even if I don’t actually have a project in mind. These fabrics for instance have been hanging out in my stash for a while now and knowing I needed enough of the same for two similar projects it was perfect. Also it is girly but not overly so.

I did these letters up tonight as a starting point.

I have a vague notion of how I am going to proceed and I’ll be documenting my progress so stay tuned!
